CASE CLOSED … what really happened in the 2001 anthrax attacks?

* ABSHIRE indicated that Ivins’ “Dugway Ames Spores” did not look like the spores from the letters, but that some of her own Bacillus anthracis (Ba) spore preparations did resemble the material contained in the letters.

USAMRIID produced documents today relating to Dugway shipment of 175 ml. of virulent Ames and 175 ml. of Sterne to USAMRIID. The b. anthracis was shipped on August 30, 2000 by FedEx.

No documents have yet been produced evidencing that the spores were ever irradiated — or were ever shipped back out.

Dr. Ezzell used the Ames strain (supplied by Terry Abshire) in “A Procedure For Preparing PCR-Amplifiable DNA from Bacillus Anthracis Spores in Soil Samples,” by Susan R. Coyne, Phiip D. Craw, Jeff D. Teska, John W. Ezzell, Erik A. Henchal and Fred K. Knauert, at p. 377 of these proceedings.

Glass beads were used. I am not scientifically inclined. But was the Silicon Signature absorbed from its environment in this 2000 experiment by Dr. Ezzell? Are these the spores that Terry had made that looked like the mailed anthrax?

Did USAMRIID’s John Ezzell and Terry Abshire, through no fault of their own, turn out to have a massive conflict of interest?

Vahid Majidi: your superiors’ 2015 claim of transparency and accountability is like the punchline of a bad joke.

Terry Abshire was the long-standing assistant of John Ezzell in the Special Pathogens branch. See publications.

In a late 1999 article, Dr. Fenselau thanked John Ezzell in connection with the DARPA research for which he made a dried powder using Ames supplied by Bruce Ivins from Flask 1029. The research involved using a sonicator and corona plasma discharge on irradiated dried Ames spores.

Ezzell’s and Abshire’s conflict of interest in Amerithrax was of no one’s making. They were called upon because of their skill set and deep experience. Dr. Ezzell had been a valued and key member of the FBI’s Hazardous Materials Response Unit since 1996. (The FBI had trained with simulants and live agents at Dugway in 2001.)

The FBI’s anthrax expert made dried powder for DARPA-funded researchers who were examining the effect of corona plasma discharge on the Ames spores

A November 27, 2001 “Report on isolates from Senator Daschle and New York Post letters” by John Ezzell stated:

“It was observed by Terry Abshire, that the Bacillus anthracis from case number SPS02.57 and SPS02.88 gave rise to two colony types after 36 to 48 h growth (see attached pictures). Colonies designated as SPS02.57.01A and.02A and SPS02.88.01A were atypical for Ames in that their colonies were more tan in color, larger and do not sporulate well….”

Carter demands accountability in anthrax blunder – USA Today
    http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/…anthrax/28262113/‎

WASHINGTON — The Pentagon will determine who was responsible for shipments of live, deadly anthrax samples to laboratories in the United States and abroad and hold them accountable, Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said Sunday.

Meantime, the samples sent were contained in multiple layers of packaging with minimal markings and shipped by commercial carriers, including Federal Express, USA TODAY has learned.

“This is obviously a very unfortunate incident,” Carter told reporters traveling with him in Vietnam.

Carter is keeping in “close touch” on the investigation into the inadvertent shipments.
