Comment: In the TV show “The Americans”, Russian illegal William — who was embedded at an outside biodefense contractor, had taken lassa virus from a BL-4 lab. The FBI Counterintelligence agents had stumbled on him. When cornered in a park, he infected himself with lassa.
Back at a facility with a containment unit, it is pretty grim as the agents watch on as his organs liquefy and pour out his orifices.

Ayman Zawahiri, associated with Al Qaeda’s biological program (as distinguished from Abu Khabab’s chemical program), considers himself quite learned in the ways of spy craft.
Read this account for an account of a spy who, by this account, seems to have gotten the better of Dr. Ayman. (I haven’t seen the book but hope to go get and read it today).

R. Scott Decker now acknowledges that 2 years after Stevens death, the FBI had still not obtained any of the Ames known to be abroad. He writes:
“Interviews at USAMRIID revealed a shipment to the United Kingdom, and records in the institute’s safety office verified Ames was sent to the laboratories of Porton Down in the institute’s safety office verified Ames was sent to the laboratories of Porton Down…”
Um… this would have been known by October 2001. Heck, it was being publicly discussed by December 2001 among members of the public and in the press. Two leading Porton Down anthrax researchers, Les Baillie and Peter Turnbull, were helping with Amerithrax. Les Baillie was consulting on the genetics under formal agreement.
Not having obtained Ames from Porton Down over the next two years constitutes gross investigative incompetence. It was known — should have been known — that Zawahiri infiltrator Rauf Ahmad had already cultured anthrax when he infiltrated the Porton Down conferences in 1999 and 2000.
Decker’s exclusion of an Al Qaeda theory because the word was spelled “penicilin” is way beyond incompetent. It was his job in the Spring 2002 to collect samples — and so he should have obtained all the anthrax samples from Porton Down by Spring 2002. FBI genetics scientist who approved Rauf Ahmad’s attendance — was from Porton Down — and he was in Maryland consulting with the FBI/Decker.

Russia’s suggestion that poison used in the Salisbury incident came from a UK facility, is “just not true”, according to the director of the military research centre at Porton Down, Gary Aitkenhead.

Rauf Ahmad, according to the MI5, visited Porton Down conferences in 1997 and 1999 — and the MI5 seized equipment and more from his luggage in 2000. I spoke to the head of sfam once who confirmed from his rolodex that Rauf Ahmad also visited in 1998. Someone from the DIA said that Rauf Ahmad would come to England annually.

“The threat became real right after the tragedy of 9/11. An unknown person mailed packets of a white powder containing anthrax spores to well-known politicians around the country. A careful, microscopic analysis of the white powder showed that the anthrax spores had been weaponized for maximum death and destruction. Suddenly, the entire country was gripped with fear that a terrorist group had access to advanced biological weapons. Although anthrax is found in the soil throughout our environment, only a person with advanced training and maniacal intentions could have purified and weaponized the anthrax and pulled off this feat.
Even after one of the largest manhunts in U.S. history, the culprit was never found, even to this day (although a leading suspect recently commited suicide). the point here is that even a single individual with some advanced biological training can terrorize a nation.” (p. 170-171)
