There are coming to be mainstream media reports reporting Iraqi/Kurd media claims that some ISIS fighters are infected with ebola. The media reports (e.g., NY Post, ABCNews) tend to cite a WHO official saying that the reports are wholly unconfirmed. The reports note that fighters rarely come from countries where there are cases of ebola.

I do not believe the hadiths would allow Al Qaeda to use a biological weapon for which there could be major “blowback”. That is, with plague and ebola, the pathogen could then infect a large muslim population such as Saudi Arabia.

Yazid Sufaat’s description of his ideal bioweapon does not seem to fit plague or ebola well.

From Malaysian news report of filmed interview:

“Among the longest-serving ISA detainees in history, Yazid, currently under travel, asset and arms deals sanctions imposed by the United Nations, believes his incarceration has to do with his “expertise”.

Trained as a biochemist on a government scholarship in the United States, this top student of the Royal Military College who retired as a captain with the army was part of a biological warfare programme under the Defence Ministry.

Osama Laden, Yazid was hesitant to reveal details about the government’s “secret” programme which was later scrapped, describing it “a long story”.

“But Yazid said that he was in fact “successful” in developing some “bugs”, but the laboratory was destroyed when the Northern Alliance forces bombed Kandahar.

“I can still find (anthrax) if I want to, but what for? It has no commercial value. Anthrax is only good for sabotaging, it cannot kill.

“It’s not my favourite bug, anyway. I’d rather use bacteria or virus yang betul-betul(really) hit you and give you one or two hours before you die.”

It is true that Aafia Siddiqui allegedly carried papers about infecting people with ebola.

Aug 22, 2014 … Lady al Qaeda … mother-of-three Aafia Siddiqui (pictured left and right) is …. in the US, including infecting people with Ebola …

And that Yazid Sufaat’s charming and pious daughter last month foolishly posted a claim that CIA was responsible for ebola in Africa. (Her mom and her sister should encourage her to stick to coffee, books, cats and studying as her Dad’s trial approaches).

And whether Al Qaeda has done experiments with plague seems an unsettled question.

    Al Qaeda bungles arms experiment

Al Qaeda, for its part, through a spokesman providing religious justification (I believe, Abu Ghaith, but may be misremembering) has said that they would never use a biological weapon in a muslim country.

In a filmed interview, Yazid Sufaat said he preferred a weapon that would be more wham-bam than the treatable anthrax. But plague and ebola don’t seem a good choice. With ISIS killing off its doctors, they would be the most vulnerable to being wiped out in a historical plague.

Al Barq was shipped to Jordan and then ended up in Israel — all this time he has been held in secret prisons. I named him about a decade ago after President Bush in a State of the Union address referred to Sufaat and two unnamed assistants.

Ayman Zawahiri’s recently detained representative has been deported to Jordan.

Samar al Barq was a secret prisoner in Jordan before being a secret prisoner in Israel.

The policy issue of torture and rendition is beyond the true crime focus of the blog, but I do note that apart from torture, there is a related issue of rendition to countries who torture.

Representative of Ayman al Zawahiri reportedly captured in Turkey

      By Thomas JoscelynDecember 7, 2014

An operative who was dispatched to Libya by al Qaeda emir Ayman al Zawahiri was reportedly captured in Turkey and is now being held in Jordan.

A Turkish daily, the Milliyet, first reported Azzouz’s capture earlier this month. The Milliyet’s reporting was subsequently picked up by other Turkish press outlets.

Azzouz was handpicked by Zawahiri to oversee al Qaeda’s efforts in post-revolution Libya. According to the Turkish reports, Azzouz was detained in mid-November after the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and Turkish authorities located him in the “summer resort” area of Yalova, which is south of Istanbul. Two laptops and a fake passport were captured along with Azzouz.

According to an account by the Washington Post, Azzouz was soon deported to Jordan, where he is currently being held.
