Tenet tells of being so alarmed about intelligence indicating an imminent al-Qaida attack that he called the White House on July 10, 2001, and insisted upon coming over immediately for a meeting. “Viewers

can judge whether the White House ignored those warnings or not,” Whipple said.

Former agency official Cofer Black said in the film that he gets angry when people describe those attacks as an intelligence failure. “We knew this was coming,” he said.

Interrogation techniques that some judged as torture — the subject of a scathing Senate Intelligence Committee report a year ago — was a debate topic within the CIA, too. Current director John Brennan expresses regret over not being more vocal about his objections and said he would refuse to waterboard a detainee even if ordered by the president.

Tenet, for his part, said, “we didn’t have time to become their best friends.”

“I still look at the ceiling at night about a lot of things,” Tenet says in the documentary, “and I’ll keep them to myself forever.”

KARACHI: The Interior Ministry has received an inquiry from the US authorities seeking information about the stay of two alleged Al-Qaeda operatives in Pakistan seven months before the attacks on United States on Sept. 11, 2001.

Sources told Daily Times that the Interior Ministry received a letter from Washington this month in which the US FBI enquired about the details of the stay of Yazid Sufaat and Zacarias Moussaoui in February 2001 in Karachi.

Frenchman Moussaoui was arrested in August 2001 in the US and is now on trial there for his alleged role in the 9/11 attacks. Yazid Sufaat is a US-educated microbiologist and formerly was a captain in the Malaysian army.

Sources said both the suspects were in Karachi on Feb. 3, 2001 when they bought air tickets through a local travel agency for Kuala Lumpur and left on a PIA flight for the Malaysian capital on Feb. 8. The sources said a senior FBI official had sent the letter to the Ministry of Interior. The officials in Islamabad referred it to the FIA’s immigration wing in Karachi for investigations.

Senior Pakistani officials have asked FIA officials to investigate how long the two men had stayed in the city. Sources in the FIA said the travel agent who had arranged air tickets for them is also being questioned. Mustafa Ahmed al-Hawsawi who was arrested with Al-Qaeda No. 3 Khalid Shaikh Mohammad from Karachi is named as an un-indicted co-conspirator of Moussaoui. The FBI got the trial postponed to make a strong case against the accused. They have also arrested a 37-year-old man, Ali Saleh Kahlah Al-Marri, in connection with the Sept. 11 attacks and charged him with making false statements to FBI agents.
