CASE CLOSED … what really happened in the 2001 anthrax attacks?

* FRONTLINE, ProPublica and McClatchy Newspapers release photos of Ivins’ lab, office and equipment (lyophilizer), obtained from FOIA requests

Last fall, FRONTLINE, ProPublica and McClatchy Newspapers raised a number of questions about the strength of the Justice Department’s case against microbiologist Dr. Bruce Ivins, whom they named as the killer after he committed suicide in 2008.

As part of our reporting, we filed more than 30 FOIA requests and recently received a CD from the FBI with a number of rarely seen photos of Ivins’ lab, including the machine the FBI claims he used to make the deadly attack anthrax powder.

The lyophilizer, or freeze dryer, which the FBI says Ivins could have used to make the attack anthrax.

This is the lyophilizer discussed by US Attorney at the 2008 conference and by the AUSA in 2011. Both were filmed and transcribed interviews. The lyophilizer was in the B2. Dr. Ivins had numbness in his right and left calves — and was hoping at one point to have 3 vertebras in his back fused. (I believe he was planning a 3 month absence in early and mid-2005, and had been experiencing the pain for several years). But then in 2005 the contemplated procedure was cancelled upon a second opinion.

Mr. Little at page 44 of his civil deposition held at Ft. Detrick explains:

“The piece of equipment that the FBI identified initially as a lyophilizer sits outside my laboratory in B5. There’s no way that he could by himself pushed that thing down to BSL3, put it in the airlock, take it out of the airlock, push it down to a laboratory. The thing is as big as a refrigerator. He would have had had to pick up, that part, to prevent contamination of the entire suit. He could not have done that and put that part in a biological safety cabinet. It’s too big.”

The McClatchy, Frontline and ProPublica group are especially deserving of a Pulitzer because of the effort they take to make the documents publicly available.

So this is the office Ivins allegedly decontaminated during operation “Stealth Bleaching” !!!????

Love the corkback bulletin boards! Not to mention all the “bleached” paper!

Note the mass spec on the toner from those exemplars pictured did not match the toner of the photocopier used on the letters. The FBI is concealing Dr. Bartick’s report(s) on the subject. The GAO should press hard for all the documents it wants — including the science the FBI has not offered in support of its case.
