The new article today on the Fall 2001 anthrax is co-authored by Abby Martin. She is is an activiist-journalist who from 2015 worked for a network funded by the Venezuelan government. And before that, she worked for RT America, funded by the Moscow government. She once supported the theory that 911 was an inside job by the US government.

No analysis is needed to know that the Fall 2001 anthrax mailings was used to support an invasion of Iraq — it expressly was on occasion. Cheney’s 1% doctrine has been ably explained elsewhere.

But beyond that, future installments by Abby Martin and Robbie Martin appear to be headed off the cliff of reason.

It would have been far more interesting if they were delve into the documents and forensic evidence. None of it pointed to Bruce Ivins.

    MintPress News

MintPress News is a Minnesota-based news website launched in 2012.[1] It covers political, economic, foreign affairs and environmental issues.[2]

MintPress News was founded by Mnar Muhawesh, a broadcast journalism graduate of St. Cloud State University. She began her career as an intern at Minnesota television station KARE and as a freelance journalist. After posting her own work on a blog, in 2011 she decided to launch her own news site.[3] Muhawesh said she believed “our media has failed us very miserably,” and spoke of her aspirations for MintPress, citing uninformed public debates around issues like Iran’s nuclear capabilities, or intervention in Syria. “We are in a crucial time in American history where most Americans don’t know what’s going on in the world around them.”[1]

MintPress News said it was a for-profit “regular news organization,” with an initial business plan where advertising revenues would exceed costs after three years.[4] MintPress’ anonymous initial investors would fund MintPress operations until 2015.[1] However, in 2013 in an email to BuzzFeed, Muhawesh said she restructured the business plan and was now the sole investor financing MintPress: “MintPress was originally funded by angel investors when I was first putting the company together over a year ago, but that route fell through last year as I restructured the business plan.”[5]

Coverage of the Ghouta chemical attacks

On August 29, 2013, a MintPress article attributed to Dale Gavlak and Yahya Ababneh said that Syrian rebels and local residents in Ghouta, Syria alleged that the Al-Nusra Front was responsible for the chemical weapons attack on August 21. The allegation was based on interviews conducted in Syria. The article’s sources claimed that weapons had been delivered to untrained fighters and “some of the fighters handled the weapons improperly and set off the explosions.”[6] The article was widely circulated[2] and cited by other news outlets, such as, the Voice of Russia, Press TV, the Spanish newspaper ABC, and[7][8][9][10]

On September 20, the Brown Moses Blog published a statement from Gavlak saying that “despite my repeated requests, made directly and through legal counsel, they have not been willing to issue a retraction stating that I was not the author. Yahya Ababneh is the sole reporter and author of the Mint Press News piece.”[11] The dispute was also covered by the New York Times’ news blog The Lede and McClatchy.[12][13]

MintPress added an editor’s note at the top of the article stating Ababneh was the sole reporter on the ground in Syria, while Gavlak assisted in researching and writing the article. It said that Gavlak was a MintPress News correspondent who had freelanced for the Associated Press in Jordan for a decade. A note at the bottom of the story says: “Some information in this article could not be independently verified. Mint Press News will continue to provide further information and updates.”[6] On September 21, 2013, MintPress published a statement by Muhawesh saying soon after the article was published, Gavlak retracted her involvement due to pressure from third parties, which Gavlak believed was prompted by Prince Bandar. The statement also claimed that Abadneh was being threatened by Saudi officials.[14]

Anthrax, Al Qaeda and Ayman Zawahiri: The Infiltration of US Biodefense

The article’s focus on Jerome Hauer’s plan in 1999 for an anthrax drill, CitySafe”, in the Bronx is seriously misguided.

Confidantes of Ayman Zawahiri— and even the Blind Sheik’s attorney — had announced that he planned to attack the US with anthrax at a large trial of Egyptian Islamic Jihad operatives in Egypt.

As corroborating documentary evidence, the laptop of Mabruk, the military commander, had been seized. And so Jerome Hauer, even though the anthrax threat had not been publicly disclosed, was simply doing his job.

And yes, West Nile outbreak (which prompted the mock drill CitySafe relating to anthrax to be canceled) was reasonably understood as a natural outbreak.

Any article that starts with a focus on Jerome Hauer is over15 years dated — and the nonsense was stupid at the time it was first raised. (It was so meritless that I and others did not even comment on it at the time. But I’ll continue reading the article in case it recovers from a weak start.

The article — which I am still reading — quickly gets much worse. As if to explain targeting of a National Enquirer photo editor:

“About two years later, on March 20th, 2001, George W. Bush is now president of the united states. The National Enquirer runs a cover story…” about his daughters. The point was really stupid in 2002 and just as stupid in 2018.

More sensibly, at the authors recount:

“Mid June, 2001, not far from the offices of the Enquirer, future 9/11 hijackers Ahmed Al Haznawi and Zaid al-Jarrah visited Ft Lauderdale, Florida Holy Cross hospital. Al Haznawi is seen by a doctor for a nasty leg lesion. The doctor is bewildered by the wound and gives Alhaznawai an antibiotic regimen to treat it. He keeps notes of the visit which are later requested by the FBI.”

Returning to the theme of biodrills, the authors — still apparently unaware that Bin Laden was expressly threatening development of anthrax as a weapon — discuss the drills as if something nefarious rather than a matter of civil servants doing their job.

“About a week later, to the north east at Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland. Several former US government officials, including former CIA director James Woolsey, former NY Office of Emergency Management director Jerome Hauer and four US journalists: Judith Miller of the NYtimes, Lester Riengold of NPR, Mary Walsh from CBS News and Jim Miklaszewski, former chief Pentagon correspondent for NBC news, all participated in an elaborate bio-terror attack simulation called Dark Winter, which included dozens of actors and observers being professionally filmed for fake news broadcasts. Jointly put on by the Center for Civilian Biodefense Strategies and the Center for Strategic and International Studies, the drill simulated a bioterror attack in the form of aerosolized smallpox targeting Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. In the simulation, the smallpox turned into a pandemic, killing millions. The culprit of the attack in this imaginary scenario was Bin Laden’s Al Qaeda network. One of the very last lines of the scripted drill is a fake broadcast reporting ‘there is a very high probability this attack was conducted by either state or a state sponsored international terrorist organization’ and that ‘A prominent Iraqi defector is claiming that Iraq arranged the bioweapons attack on the US through intermediaries’. This drill is later said to have been extremely influential in the thinking of several key Bush officials like Scooter Libby and Dick Cheney. The Dark Winter operation was carried out the two days over June 22 – June 23, 2001.”

*****In open correspondence with Bin Laden, an imam in Great Britain was urging Bin Laden to use biological weapons. Bin Laden’s written response was that it was a religious duty to acquire such weapons, but that it would be up to them how to use them.
So what were the named governmental employees supposed to do? Not take steps in preparation — in defense of the threat?
      They were doing their job.*****

In the article today, the authors explain:

“Fast forward to August 16th, 2001. In Minnesota, FBI agent Harry Samit takes a man named Zacarias Moussaoui into custody. Earlier that day, they were contacted by a flight instructor of Pan-Am International Flight Academy because of Moussaoui suspicious behavior. Moussaoui wanted to learn only how to take off, not to land. When Samit and other FBI agents examined Moussaoui belongings they became alarmed that he might have terrorist intentions. His belongings included a laptop, two knives, flight manuals for Boeing’s 747 aircraft, a flight simulator computer program, and a computer disk with information about crop dusting. Over the next ten days, FBI agents including Samit and Coleen Rowley sent 70 emails requesting access to search Moussaoui room and laptop.

Later, on August 28th, 2001, the head FBI office responded to the Minnesota branches request. FBI’s national security law unit head, Marion Bowman, nicknamed “Spike” Bowman, delivered the bad news to Rowley. Their request for a warrant was rejected. According to statements later made by Samit and Rowley, they believes if Moussaoui belongings had been searched prior to 9/11, the entire plot could have possibly been unraveled. To this day, Rowley pins the blame on Spike Bowman for preventing it from happening.”

Now this is relevant and sound history.

The authors of today’s article summarize:

“Three months after participating in Operation Dark Winter, on September 4th 2001, NY Times reporter Judith Miller co-authors an article on Pentagon plans to develop a more potent version of weaponized anthrax, titled “U.S. Germ Warfare Research Pushes Treaty Limits”. Judith Miller’s main journalistic beat during this period was covering the very secretive US bioweapons program.

Back in Minnesota, on September 10th, 2001, Samit resorts to reporting a potential hijacking to the FAA in an attempt to get a warrant against Moussaoui. In an email he pleads “I am so desperate to get into his computer, I’ll take anything,”

It’s the morning of September 11th 2001, and FEMA teams had already moved equipment into downtown Manhattan the night before to prepare for another bioterror anthrax drill put on by Giuliani’s office of emergency management called ‘Tripod II’. It was scheduled for the 12th, but the horrifying events that took place next put Tripod II on hold, indefinitely.”

The EIJ military commander, Mabruk, and EIJ shura member Al-Najjar, had explained Zawahiri’s plan to use anthrax. (Zawahiri merged EIJ into Al Qaeda). The Blind Sheik’s lawyer had also. And even Bin Laden had exchanged open letters with a British imam about his view that it was a religious duty to develop biological weapons. Bin Laden’s written response was once posted to the internet but the CIA had it taken down.

And so while today’s article is correct to cast Harry Samit as the hero he was, it is wrongheaded to focus on governmental biodefense drills without even so much as mentioning the Al Qaeda / EIJ theats to use anthrax that led to the drills.

      Abby Martin writes:

“Around 9pm, in Washington DC, Dick Cheney’s staff is alerted to start taking cipro injections to prevent anthrax by former NY city Office of Emergency Management head, and current Kroll inc director, Jerome Hauer. It is still unknown exactly who in the Bush administration, or on Cheney’s staff, started taking cipro, or for how long they continued to take it.”

Um. It hardly matters. And Jerome Hauer was doing his job — and well — to advise that they take antibiotic given Bin Laden’s and Zawahiri’s threat to use anthrax against US targets. Given that the evidence pointed to Bin Laden for the planes into the towers, then Hauer would have been guilty of malfeasance to not sound such an alert (unless the Secret Service already had).

I have no problem with the recounting of historical fact but not to set the stage by describing BIn Laden’s and Zawahiri’s threat to use anthrax against US targets — as corroborated by Mabruk’s seized laptop — is hugely misleading or uninformed. Hauer was a good friend of the former FBI agent who headed WTC security, John O’Neill. O’Neill specifically went to great lengths to obtain a copy of the anthrax documents on Mabruk’s computer. (The CIA wasn’t playing well with others). That FBI Agent, John O’Neill, was the one sounding the alarm loud and clear (behind closed doors).

There is no reason — and it was hardly even possible — for Abby Martin to know these things in 2002. In 2018, however, there is simply no excuse for being uninformed for misleading readers.

But I’m still reading the article. Who knows. Maybe the Martin co-authors will pull up from their spiralling descent into shoddy analysis.

6 days later, on September 19th 2001: Influential neocon Richard Perle, PNAC member, advisor to George W Bush AND member of the Office of Special Planning in the Pentagon, goes on CNN to say conventional means to stop future attacks “won’t be effective” because “the next attack” is likely to be “chemical or biological weapons used in water supplies”

Martin is making it look like Perle is pulling this out of his ass. When instead Ayman Zawahrii had not only announced that this was his intent, but had taken numerous, elaborate steps toward that end.

So what was Perle as to this point? He was informed on the threat and doing his job to alert the public to the risk.

      Robbie Martin continues:

ROBBIE : Two days later, on September 22nd 2001: Time Magazine runs a compelling story about how some of the 9/11 hijackers may have attempted to rent crop dusters for a potential attack, but the details are vague. The reports were based on eyewitness testimony of James Lester, who worked at an airstrip in Belle Glade, Florida, as a crop-duster mechanic. He remembered Muhammad Atta specifically and told reporters: “They wanted to know (the) capacity of the airplane, how much would the airplane hold, how much fuel and how to crank it.” He and others at the airfield also describe strange behavior from Muhammad Atta such as Atta trying to climb into the cockpit of a crop duster and start it without permission.

On the same day, Newsday runs an article about the crop-dusters quoting now defacto TV terrorism expert Jerome Hauer. Hauer says there is a ‘new sense of urgency in Washington DC’ on the bioterrorism issue and intelligence information that “Osama Bin Laden wants to acquire these agents and we know he has links to Saddam and Saddam Hussein has them”

Comment: On a minor immaterial point, I think the New York Times ran a story two or three days earlier. I had bought Cipro by September 22 and I was just going by media reports.

Now on the question of Saddam Hussein having the agents, everyone knows that he did once have anthrax and Dr. Germ lied horribly about it– finally giving a sobbing account at a press conference where she admitted what had been found at the chicken farm. As for cropdusting capability, Saudi Prince Bandar, then head of Saudi intelligence and a good Bush family friend, years earlier had paid for delivery of combat configured helicopters to Iraq that included a quick release pesticide mechanism. There is a transcript made by DIA of his meeting with Sarkis Soghanalian at Benihanas. (The helicopters were allegedly sold to the Ministry of Agriculture and intended for cropdusting missions. Yeah, right. This was the height of the Iraq-Iran war. What were the illegally mounted TOW-missiles for? Hunting gophers?

As an added element confounding things, there were EIJ connections to northern Iraq — Dr.. Ayman had sent 4 of his top people.

Bottom-line is truth sometimes can be complicated. I think everyone can agree that it was a worrisome situation given Bin Laden’s promise to develop anthrax as a weapon, the 100 list of targets on military commander Mabruk’s computer and the might of Saddam’s military. But the reality is that Al Qaeda did not need the help of Saddam to develop anthrax. The attendees at the Porton Down anthrax conference were more than willing to help Al Qaeda infiltrator Rauf Ahmad. Unfortunately, Bush junior and the neo-cons adivising him wanted to invade Iraq and so the anthrax mailing served as justification or rationale. But blame Dr. Ayman Zawahiri and Osama Bin Laden for that — not Richard Perle or Jerome Hauer.

      Robbie Martin writes:

“The next day on September 23rd 2001: CNN reports “Last week, the FBI imposed a ban on crop-dusting but has since modified it to keep crop-dusters away from metropolitan areas.”

Around the same time The National Agricultural Aviation Association posted the following statement, saying it had come from the FBI:

“Members should be vigilant to any suspicious activity relative to the use, training in or acquisition of dangerous chemicals or airborne application of same, including threats, unusual purchases, suspicious behavior by employees or customers and unusual contacts with the public. Members should report any suspicious circumstances or information to local FBI offices.”

On September 24th 2001: ABC and AP start running similar reports, this time with slightly more details, including claims the hijackers may have intended to disperse anthrax with the crop dusters. The articles insinuate that 9/11 was not an isolated event and there could be more attacks coming via different means. Even though the behavior of Muhammad Atta was almost cartoonishly unbelievable, in 2002 an even more ridiculous story comes out involving Atta trying to get a USDA government loan for crop-dusters appeared, seemingly confirming these early reports.”

Robbie Martin has cut-and-pasted a conspiracy theory dating to 2002 rather than do the research related to Al Qaeda’s plan for crop-dusting planes. Zacarias Moussaoui, for example, was cartoonish because he was a joke. A sick joke.

Moussaoui testimony: After Moussaoui got in trouble with KSM for Yazid Sufaat’s unauthorized purchase of 10 tons of ammonium nitrate to blow up the US embassy in KL, AQ #2 Atef formally tasked Moussaoui with buying and learning to fly a crop dusting plane for use in an attack

That same day, a major drill went underway in England involving a mock bioterror attack. That evening, the BBC runs a program showing footage of the drill with participants wearing hazmat suits. Dr David Claridge, a UK intelligence analyst tries to tamp down the hysteria it might generate.”

Comment: It was widely understood that with the collapse of the Soviet Union, there were numerous skilled anthrax scientists who were not being paid. Even without considering Russian mafia, you had people wanting to be paid for their skilled work.

As for concern in the UK, Robbie seems unaware that MI5 had caught Dr. Zawahiri’s infiltrator Rauf Ahmad with equipment and materials for Al Qaeda’s anthrax program.

And seems unaware that Zawahiri’s infiltrator had known to have cultivated anthrax. Indeed, he presented on the subject at a Porton Down conference.

With its population concentrated in London, the UK had — and has — every right to be concerned.

Ironically, the head guy there last month said that although he stays up nights worrying about the biochem threat, he’s more worried about organized crime.

GERMS chronicles the history of biowarfare and also proposes that one of the greatest threats we face is bioterrorism from groups like Al Qaeda, working with countries like Iraq, or even Russia. Miller received special access to senior Bush officials for her book, specifically Scooter Libby, who she portrayed as a heroic genius and misunderstood soothsayer.

Later that afternoon in Maryland, an Egyptian-born EPA scientist and former Ft. Detrick biowarfare researcher, Dr. Ayaad Assaad, gets a surprise phone call from the FBI. He’s requested to appear before them the next day to discuss an anonymous letter from someone claiming to be a former coworker accusing him of being a potential bioterrorist.”

For his part, Dr. Assaad thinks the “Ivins Theory” is part of a “vicious plot.” I don’t think that as such — but I do think the former lead Amerithrax investigator, Richard Lambert, says the FBI is withholding a staggering amount of exculpatory evidence.

According to law enforcement, once they got a positive result for anthrax and spoke to a few of Stevens’ co-workers they pieced together a likely scenario (they claimed) as to how Stevens contracted the anthrax. Managing editor of the Sun Joe West helped paint the picture with an incredible story, later published in the Enquirer itself (the Enquirer and Sun share the same building and are both owned by AMI). He says a letter arrived three weeks earlier to the office with “Please forward to Jennifer Lopez ℅ The Sun” written on the envelope. Before he even saw the writing, he found the letter suspicious, because it felt bulky. When Joe picked it up out of the pile he could feel a cylindrical object inside of it. He told himself ‘don’t open it’ and threw it in the trash. Recently hired news assistant, Bobby Bender was nearby, and noticed the odd letter. As his daughter happened to be a huge JLo fan, he asked if he could open it. Joe obliged. As Bobby opened it, he describes a cigar tube falling out that contained a real cigar. It was accompanied by an empty tin of chewing tobacco, a small empty detergent carton and a stalker like hand written sexually provocative fan-letter to Jennifer Lopez. Joe decided he has more important things to do so he let Bobby amuse himself with the contents.

As Bobby walked to another area of the Sun offices, 13-year old Photo assistant Roz Suss fills in the gaps with his eye witness account.

“It was a business size sheet of stationary decorated with pink and blue clouds around the edges, it was folded into three sections, and in the middle was a pile of what looked like pink tinged talcum powder. Sticking out of the powder was a little gold something. I couldn’t tell.” Roz said.

“Just then Bob Stevens came walking from his desk , he was obviously curious about it and held out his hands. Bender delicately transferred the letter from his palms to Bob’s hand. Bob walked back to his desk and sat down, holding the letter in his cupped palms over the keyboard of his computer, with his arms bent so his face was right over the powder and just inches away from it”

“He was peering down for several seconds into the letter and the powder and the gold thing sticking out” “I heard him say ‘Gee, it looks like a Jewish star’” “I reached from behind Bob and picked it out of the powder with two fingers. Sure enough, it was a little plastic Star of David with a little loop for a string or chain. I threw it into the trash and walked away” I never did see what Bob did with the letter or the powder, I assume he threw it in the trash.”

Here is my take. Your mileage may vary.

The letter sent to AMI in Florida sought to dissuade Jennifer Lopez from a planned marriage. A wedding or marriage is well-known Al Qaeda code for an attack. The sender said how much he loved her and asked her to marry him. Stevens noted at the time it was especially off the wall given that the Sun did not deal with celebrities, which was the subject of the sister-paper Globe. Stevens’ fellow photo editor Roz Suss was looking over his shoulder: “With that Bob says to me,” Hey, I think there’s something gold in here. It looks like a Jewish star sticking out of the powder.” I walked up behind him and reached over his shoulder. I pulled this little star out of what looked like a mound of powder in this letter. I remember it as a fine white powder.” “It looked like something from a Cracker Jacks box,” she says. She picked it out of the powder and tossed it in her wastebasket. Stevens’ colleague Bobby Bender has a different recollection. He says he opened a letter to Jennifer Lopez, recalls handling a large envelope to Jennifer Lopez, care of the Sun. In it was a cigar tube containing a cigar, a small Star of David charm, and something that seemed like soap powder. Hambali and two al-Qaeda minions considered attacking an Israeli restaurant, with a Star of David above it, in the Khao San Rd. backpacker area in Bangkok.

A December 1998 Presidential Daily Brief to President Clinton explained: “An alleged Bin Ladin supporter late last month remarked to his mother that he planned to work in ‘commerce’ from abroad and said his impending ‘marriage,’ which would take place soon, would be a ’surprise.’” The December 1998 PDB continued: “‘Commerce’ and ‘marriage’ often are code words for attacks.” Of course, sometimes, a young man just wants to tell his mom he’s got a job or warn her that she may not approve of the woman he intends to marry. Similarly, sometimes folks who write to tabloids are merely commenting on JLo’s impending nuptials.

Jennifer Lopez’s fame had withstood a number of under performing movies, to include the movie “The Cell” in the year 2000. In the movie, following a trail of bodies, an FBI agent tracks down and captures a disturbed serial killer. Before the killer can reveal the whereabouts of his next victim (a woman trapped in a cell on the verge of drowning), he falls into a coma. Enter beautiful FBI psychologist Lopez, who uses a radical link to the killer’s brain that could destroy her own sanity. “Her mission: Find the cell’s location before time runs out, and avoid getting trapped inside the killer’s head.” According to an early National Enquirer, Stevens held it up to his face and then put it down on the keyboard (where traces of anthrax were found). The publisher’s wife was the real estate broker who rented to two of the hijackers.

The heaviest concentration was in the mailroom on the first floor, with positive findings in many cubicles throughout the first floor. The second floor had positive traces mainly in the hallways. The third floor had the fewest positive traces. The FBI has a theory that the spores were distributed on copy paper, perhaps having fallen onto an open ream of paper in the mailroom where it was stored. Perhaps instead spores could have been spread by a vacuum cleaner and collected at copier machines because of the electrostatic charge and the fans
      on the machines.

Mrs. Stevens once commented: “They get strange letters sometimes, and the consensus seems to be that if Robert wasn’t wearing his glasses and if it was something funny, he would hold the letters up to his face. They think perhaps that’s how he got it. Just bad luck.” The key expert evidence on this issue of the Jennifer Lopez letter thus far is the New England Journal of Medicine in which Stevens’ doctor concludes that the letter, opened 9/19 and resulting in symptoms appearing 9/30, evidenced an incubation period consistent with inhalational anthrax.

A recent CDC report discusses a second letter of possible interest thought to have been opened on September 25 by a different woman who was exposed. The jury will have to remain out unless and until there is more information on the letter(s) that transmitted the anthrax to AMI. The FBI went back to AMI in August 2002. A February 2003 article in Esquire says the “cops and the doctors” have concluded that there were two letters, following two different paths, with one having been mailed to an old address of the National Enquirer before being forwarded. If there were two different letters, were they to two different AMI publications? That would make sense — with one directed to the Sun and one directed to the National Enquirer.

What does the J.Lo letter tell us about the sender, or senders? J.Lo is what they used to call a “sex bomb” — and the biggest one at the time. She had international fame. The vehicle had a “weird” love letter, a Star of David, maybe a cigar. Who had “issues” and weird obsessions
with women, sex (with a cigar being a crude symbol) and Jewish symbolism? Atta, for example, had strict instructions in his will about what women would be allowed to do at his funeral. Follow the anomalies.

Two of the hijackers had subscriptions to AMI publications, as did Al Qaeda operative al-Marabh. Boston cab driver Al-Marabh had been in contact with the hijackers, to include Alghamdi who rented an apartment from the wife of the AMI publisher. Atta was seen at the apartment of Al-Marabh and his uncle (the co-founder with Jaballah of an islamic school in Toronto in the Spring of 2001. After coming to Canada in 1996, Jaballah spoke with Ayman regularly on Ayman’s satellite phone.

Abbie Martin writes of another connection:

“That day, questions about Gloria Irish’s connection to 9/11 and the anthrax attacks are also raised by the US press. The Washington Post runs the article: ‘Sun Editor’s Wife Found Rentals for two hijackers’ by Jason Blum. In it, FBI spokesperson Judy Orihuela reiterates that her renting an apartment to the hijackers, and her husband’s employment at the AMI building is “just a coincidence right now,” and “I’m sure there will be some sort of follow-up.” While the FBI only questioned Gloria about this, the Washington Post found another connection involving her husband.

“Mike Irish, who, records show, is a licensed airplane pilot, several years ago was a member of the Civil Air Patrol based at a small-plane airport in Lantana, just north of Delray Beach, an official there said. One of the hijackers, Mohamed Atta, reportedly rented a plane at that airport to practice flying for three days in August. Robert Stevens, 63, the Sun photo editor who died of anthrax Oct. 5, also lives in Lantana. But there is no indication whether Irish or Stevens ever crossed paths with Atta.”

Unbeknownst to the American public, that same day, George Bush himself pressures Robert Mueller of the FBI to find a link between the anthrax mailings and Al Qaeda, or other middle eastern groups.”

I am going to skip over the next lengthy chronological accounts. It simply isn’t even attempting to advance analysis.

But the co-author deserves kudos for finding the Pence press conference.
“The next morning of October 27th 2001: then-freshman congressman, now-vice president Mike Pence, who once hosted an AM talk show describing himself as ‘Rush Limbaugh on decaf’ conducts a press conference outside the Capitol proclaiming revenge and biblical style justice to whoever conducted the anthrax attacks. His family–with news cameras in tow–gets tested for anthrax at the hospital after it is allegedly found in his office.

No news outlets questioned his grandstanding or odd performance of going to the hospital with his family, and unlike senators Daschle and Leahy in their press appearances, Mike Pence alluded to to the anthrax letters being connected to the larger ‘war on terror.’

Across town from Pence’s strange press conference, there is a funeral service being held for Joseph Curseen Jr, the second Brentwood postal worker to die from anthrax. A caravan of USPS trucks follow the funeral procession.”

      See generally
Congressman Mike Pence & Pulitzer prize winning science writer Laurie Garrett agree on Anthrax Mailings.. Pence: “I don’t know who sent it” — I am afraid we may have missed the off-ramp to the truth.” … Garrett: “I get outraged because the FBI completely botched the investigation on the anthrax.”

Abby and Robbie Martin, in their first installment, have not yet addressed any of the facts relating to Al Qaeda’s anthrax program. Rauf Ahmad, Yazid Sufaat, Ayman Zawahiri — such names are never uttered.

MintPress is a political rather than true crime blog. Politics has no place in true crime analysis.

Did Bush and the neocons use the Fall 2001 anthrax mailings to justify invasion of Iraq. Yes. We know that.

The more interesting question is: whodunnit? I don’t know and at last report, Vice President Pence doesn’t either. It’s time to find out.

Al Qaeda PhD microbiologist Samar Al-Barq told US interrogators “I made the anthrax” — but then he recanted saying he had lied under coercion.

New Charges Confirm That ‘Infiltration’ Was An Aspect Of Russian 2016 Attack

Butina is charged with failing to register under the Foreign Agents Registration Act, an allegation the Justice Department also has made against Donald Trump’s former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort.

The new court documents describe a series of messages she exchanged with other people discussing their work to try to advocate for Russia behind the scenes in Washington, D.C., as the 2016 political season wore on.

I try to avoid politics because addressing the subject merely loses half of the audience one is trying to persuade on an issue of true crime and document analysis. So I kept to myself my disappointment that Mike Pence doesn’t think that smoking kills. (Having worked at the national firms that represented the two leading tobacco companies, I can assure you that (1) smoking kills, and (2) the cigarette companies have been knowingly marketing cancer now for over a half century.

“In the coming weeks, Americans are going to be treated with the worst kind of Washington-speak regarding the tobacco legislation currently being considered by the Congress and Attorney Generals from forty different states. We will hear about the scourge of tobacco and the resultant premature deaths.
Time for a quick reality check. Despite the hysteria from the political class and the media, smoking doesn’t kill. In fact, 2 out of every three smokers does not die from a smoking related illness and 9 out of ten smokers do not contract lung cancer.”

But I cannot avoid sharing the disappointment of David Willman and the FBI scientists and consultants quoted explaining that Mike Pence had no basis for suggesting that the mailed anthrax was genetically modified. (I mean, it wasn’t even subject to debate — wasn’t even debated.)

Wormold does not have access to any real intelligence, but he needs the money, and so he makes it up. As his own fiction evolves, Wormold creates a network of fake informants and spies; he hands over sketches of vacuum cleaner parts, claiming these depict a secret military installation.

London, hungry for intelligence and convinced that something dodgy is being plotted in Cuba, swallows the lot, places full confidence in its man in Havana, and demands more. This is every intelligence officer’s worst nightmare, and the central vulnerability of most espionage: a preconceived but erroneous expectation imposed from above, an eager and greedy source with a vivid imagination, and a lot of wishful thinking. This is also what happened to British intelligence in the run-up to the Iraq War.

Rebekah Brooks Admits Paying Public Official For Saddam-Anthrax Story
    Posted: 02/28/2014
    By Michael Holden
LONDON, Feb 28 (Reuters) – Rebekah Brooks, the ex-chief executive of News Corp.’s British newspaper arm, told a London court on Friday she had paid a public official for a story about former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein planning to attack Britain with the poison anthrax.
Brooks, who is on trial on charges of sanctioning such illegal payments, said she agreed to pay for the 1998 report when she was deputy editor of Rupert Murdoch’s Sun tabloid because there was an “overwhelming public interest” to do so.
However, she denies approving almost 40,000 pounds ($66,700)in payments to a Ministry of Defence official for a series of stories for which she on trial. She also denies charges of conspiracy to hack phones and perverting the course of justice.
On Thursday, Brooks admitted she had authorised payments to public officials, something which is illegal, on a “half a dozen” occasions from 1998 to 2009, a period which covered her time as time as editor or deputy of Murdoch’s British tabloids, the Sun and News of the World.
Appearing for a sixth day in the witness box at London’s Old Bailey court, Brooks said the public official, who was later revealed to be a chief petty officer in the Royal Navy, had called the paper about the threat from Saddam and the deadly poison anthrax.
“They said they had reason to believe … that the government or the security services were covering up a plot by Saddam Hussein to bring in anthrax into the country for the start of a terrorist campaign attack,” she said.
“It was very quickly brought to my attention because it was a public official and they were asking for money in return for information.”
She told the court that she was called to Downing Street for a high-level meeting with senior security and political figures who confirmed its veracity.
She said after that meeting she agreed to pay for the story as it had satisfied her criteria that there had to be an overwhelming public interest.
The source for the story was later traced following an investigation into the leak and prosecuted for breaking the Official Secrets Act, she said.

Brooks paid official for Saddam anthrax story

LONDON: Rebekah Brooks, the ex-chief executive of News Corp.’s British newspaper arm, told a London court on Friday she had paid a public official for a story about former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein planning to attack Britain with the poison anthrax.

Brooks, who is on trial on charges of sanctioning such illegal payments, said she agreed to pay for the 1998 report when she was deputy editor of Rupert Murdoch’s Sun tabloid because there was an “overwhelming public interest” to do so.

Comment: Who was the official? As I vaguely recall, the 1998 story was a very provocative and sensational story given the details of how the anthrax would be smuggled by a woman. With identification of the official, perhaps it could be corroborated or debunked. It seems that the public has a right to have the official identified given that the individual wrongly took money.

In October 2001, Dany Shoham, was publicly saying that Israeli intelligence reported it.

I never agreed with Dany, who I know, that Iraq was involved in the mailings. (I do credit the former head CIA Zawahiri Task Force Michael Scheur, though, that it is 100% Al Qaeda was experimenting with anthrax at Ansar Islam (which was formed by an amalgamation of groups after Ayman Zawahiri sent four senior EIJ leaders there in 2001).

    An article at the time:

“Dany Shoham, a research associate at Tel Aviv University’s Begin-Sadat Center of Strategic Studies, said the regime of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein attempted to bring biological weapons agents into Britain and the United States in 1998. The attempt was reported by Israeli intelligence.

At the time, Shoham said, Iraqi women agents arriving in the United States were hiding vials filled with biological agents under their dresses.

Iraq was also attempting to smuggle biological and chemical agents into Britain hidden in duty-free goods.

Shoham, a reserve intelligence officer with close ties to Western intelligence agencies, said the Iraqi effort was foiled by British authorities. He suggested that Iraq succeeded in bringing the anthrax virus into the United States.

Iraq has been developing the same type of powder anthrax now being mailed to prominent Americans, Shoham said. He said another developer of powder anthrax has been the Al Qaida group headed by Saudi billionaire fugitive Osama Bin Laden.

“Bin Laden and several Arab countries — most specifically Iraq — have been working for years to develop this capacity,” Shoham, who has published articles in leading professional journals, said. “Of course, we do not yet know for sure that Bin Laden and or Iraq is behind the recent anthrax attacks.”

      Lisa O’Carroll

She has also admitted sanctioning payment for a story about Saddam Hussein threatening to swamp Britain with anthrax poison in 1998, refusing requests by M15 and M16 not to run the story. …

On Friday the court heard of one example when, in 1998, someone who was “clearly” a public official phoned the Sun to say the “secret service were covering up a plot by Saddam Hussein to bring in anthrax to this country”.

Brooks told how in trying to corroborate the story, the security services were alerted to the Sun’s investigation and she was summoned to Downing Street.

“I remember representatives from MI5, MI6, GCHQ, Downing Street and lawyers who may have been representing some of the parties,” she said. “First of all by its very nature, it [the meeting] confirmed what the public official was telling us was true.”

Brooks, who was deputy editor of the Sun at the time, was in charge of the paper as the editor was away, the told the court. She was asked not to proceed with the story but decided it was in the public interest and went ahead splashing with story “Saddam anthrax in our duty frees”.

The source was identified after an internal inquiry as a chief petty officer and he was subsequently prosecuted.

I summarized my view of the issue in 2002 on Cryptome:

Atta’s travels to Prague and the alleged Iraq connection.
According to some reports, Atta met in Prague with an Iraqi case handler and obtained the anthrax from Iraq then. (93) The reported transfer of a vial of anthrax, however, is totally unproven (regardless whether the story traces back to Israeli intelligence or instead traces back to Egyptian intelligence). The origin of the story seems to have been based simply on speculation of what might have occurred (at a meeting that has not yet even been established to have occurred).

In contrast to what most of the senior Czech officials have said, the Prague Post quoted the director general of the Czech foreign intelligence service UZSI (Office of Foreign Relations and Information), Frantisek Bublan, denying the much-touted meeting — and he also now may (or perhaps not) have been joined by the Czech President.(94) But never let it be said the White House has been consistent on the issue either.(95) Until and unless those Czech officials still claiming there was a meeting produce a photo, we are left with a mush of conflicting and inconclusive reports. The bottom-line is that Al Qaeda did not need Iraq to commit this crime and it is more prudent to limit the conclusion to Al Qaeda’s involvement absent additional evidence, particularly when going to war is at issue.

Mr. Pearl, a former Assistant Secretary of Defense, says there is “powerful evidence” showing Iraq is giving biological and chemical weapons to Al Qaeda.(96) There are some detailed reports by defectors concerning Al Qaeda’s coordination with Saddam on biological and chemical weapons beginning in 1998, but those reports all depend on the reliability of those defectors — the briefs made by President Bush and Tony Blair lacked a “smoking gun” in this regard.(97) The presence of facilities does not tell you much. Implied threats that biological weapons will be used in defense are to be expected given that the US has said it is going to attack Iraq (based on its worst fears).

A detailed argument relating to the connections between Iraq and Al Qaeda can be found online in the trillion dollar complaint against Iraq brought by the law firm Kreindler & Kreindler in connection with 9/11

The FBI scrutiny of Mikesell became so intense that, according to family members, he began to drink heavily. Although he died from a heart attack in October 2002, family members said that he drank himself to death.”
