CASE CLOSED … what really happened in the 2001 anthrax attacks?

* It was contemplated that the work with the visiting Egyptian scientist might involve fixation of the spore preparations to determine if there were any ultrastructure changes in the spores that could be observed with electron microscopy.

This research done by Bruce Ivins and others in the BL-3 contemplated that there would be fixation of the spore preparations to determine if the decontamination agent led to any observed ultrastructure changes in the spores that could be observed with electron microscopy. Did it? University of Michigan failed to give me any documents pursuant to my FOIA request — responding that they had no records relating to such research. Same with EPA. Same with USAMRIID. Heba Zawahiri was the former colleague and professor in the medical school department in Cairo of principal researcher Tarek Hamouda. She is Ayman’s sister. She has learning on this subject. Would she expect there to be ultrastructure changes? Tarek’s lifelong friend, our mutual friend “Tariq”, tells me that he was recruited by Ayman Zawahiri when Ayman would come to the medical school to speak on Fridays. Is it correct that neither USAMRIID, EPA nor University of Michigan has any documents relating to this research? Or were those institutions merely withholding the documents and/or not looking hard enough. If the latter, who is responsible? Why aren’t the taxpayers who funded the DARPA research entitled to compliance with FOIA about the research involving dangerous pathogens (Ames anthrax) by a former Zawahiri associate working alongside Bruce Ivins and Patricia Fellows in the B-3? Why should taxpayers fund EPA research on the subject of decontamination when they failed to maintain adequate record of the research they did involving the agent at issue in the research described above?

Tarek’s company NanoBio was funded by Perseus, the DC venture firm that had been headed by the guy who came to be in charge of Afghanistan and Pakistan at the State Department. The #3 under Clinton. So in March 2005, when the FBI first came to be faxed the 16 pages about this research (from someone using Art Friedlander’s fax number), there was already an additional, awkward potential conflict of interest involving the investment of millions of dollars. I called a friend at Perseus to ask if the company had done due diligence but did not hear back. Did they? Was a security check ever done? Certainly prior to 2001, not even USAMRIID was vetting foreign scientists being given access to the B3. Long ago I emailed Tarek, the scientist working in the B3 with Ivins, to ask who he knew (if he knew the same Egyptian Islamic Group/ Egyptian Islamic Jihad members I did) but I didn’t hear back. I’m rather gullible. I tend to believe anyone who responds to questions. But only if they in fact respond to questions and provide the documents required to be produced under FOIA.
