CASE CLOSED … what really happened in the 2001 anthrax attacks?

* The work with virulent Ames was done under Biolevel-3 and the University of Michigan researchers working with Dr. Ivins, Fellows and Linscott were required to receive anthrax and plague vaccinations in advance of the BL-3 work.

I visited University of Michigan campus last week. It’s very big. Just one shuttle bus leaving from Central Campus went on a 12 mile loop.

I like the way the United States thinks proactively.

Report from my ever-helpful, long-missed correspondent:

“Presently, there are 15,000 doses of plague vaccine en route to mountain town in Siberia where there are presently 16 in quarantine after boy contracts the disease after “skinning a rodent” on a hunting trip with father.

At least 4,000 residents in the region will be urgently vaccinated as a precaution, said reports.

Emergency vaccine for at least 15,000 people was ordered and has started arriving in the region in southern Siberia.

A total of 6,192 people in this district had been vaccinated prior to the outbreak in what is considered a high risk locality.”

    A Fleet of M&M-Shooting Drones Is the Black-Footed Ferret’s Last …

    WIRED-Jul 7, 2016
So the US Fish and Wildlife Service wants to use drones to sprinkle peanut butter-flavored plague vaccines over the prairie dog’s habitat.

Now I may criticize the Army on the grounds that its failure to provide Ivins’ and Fellows’ notebook with his contemporaneous entries on the date of mailing, but I can get behind any effort that involves M&M’s and saving those cute prairie dogs.

CDC inspectors question handling of plague samples at APG lab [The Baltimore Sun], McClatchy-Tribune 09/11/2015 12:01 AM ET
    http://www.bloomberg.com/research/markets/news/article.asp?docKey=600-201509110001KRTRIB__BUSNEWS_5407_48566-1

The new problems center on a pair of facilities in Maryland. The CDC inspectors flagged the plague bacteria at Edgewood Chemical and Biological Center on the Edgewood Area of Aberdeen Proving Ground. The samples originated at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Disease at Fort Detrick in Frederick.

The Army expects to have final results from the genetic testing of the plague sample by the end of the month, Schwartz said. It is unclear what originally prompted the CDC inspectors’ concerns.

Jason McDonald, a spokesman for the CDC, said investigators are looking into several shipments between military labs but that it was still uncertain whether the materials involved were subject to special regulations for dangerous pathogens.

“CDC is working to track shipments and confirm the safety of those working with these materials,” he said.

CDC investigates pathogens found in Department of Defense labs, Sept 10, 2015
    http://www.cbsnews.com/news/cdc-pathogens-found-in-department-of-defense-labs/

The CDC confirms it is investigating possible mishandling of several samples of pathogens associated with bioterrorism — including plague, possible live strains of anthrax and two kinds of equine encephalitis, a virus derived from horses that causes swelling of the brain — that were discovered during routine inspections on August 17.

They were found at four labs — three in Maryland and one in Utah — that are part of the Department of Defense’s “Critical Reagents Program.” The potential issues involved transfers that may have been improperly documented between DoD facilities.

According to the CDC, the plague bacteria (Yersinia Pestis) discovered was tested, but investigators now believe it was properly packaged and labeled that the bacteria was not live.

These inspections are part of ongoing investigations into the handling ofbioterrorism agents since a mishap in May in which anthrax that was supposed to have been deactivated, but remained live, was accidentally shipped to 17 statesover a two-month period from Dugway Proving Ground.

DoD Official: Plague Bacteria and Encephalitis Possibly Shipped, SEP 10 2015, 5:02 PM ET
by JIM MIKLASZEWSKI and COURTNEY KUBE
    http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/dod-official-plague-bacteria-encephalitis-possibly-shipped-n425246

“Following on the news that broke earlier this year that U.S. military labs both improperly stored and shipped deadly anthrax specimens, a senior defense official told NBC News on Thursday that active samples of plague bacteria and two strains of encephalitis may also have been shipped from military labs to locations all over the world.

Cook said so far they are only looking at whether the plague and encephalitis samples were mislabeled — and he is not aware whether any were shipped around the world, unlike the anthrax samples.

But a senior defense official told NBC News they don’t know whether any was shipped out and that they cannot rule it out yet.”

Did the University of Michigan researchers have to be vaccinated with plague simply because plague research was done in the B3 where they worked alongside Ivins, Fellows, Linscott (and perhaps Dr. Friedlander)? Or did their work also include a decontamination experiment involving Yersinia pestis.

Was the B3 one in Building 1425 or was it one in Building 1412. What room number?

Al Qaeda through a spokesman in particular has said that it would never use anthrax in the home of Mecca and Medina. Relatedly, IMO, Al Qaeda won’t use smallpox because then passengers on a plane could take it to muslim countries.

Here’s a story today about the US having placed an order for a new smallpox vaccine that would treat two million people in the event of an attack. There’s certainly big money in dealing with the issue of (biological) weapons — whether involved in creating the threat, responding to the threat, or both.

    http://metro.co.uk/2013/04/08/could-smallpox-really-be-turned-into-a-biological-weapon-by-terrorists-3585028/

“Smallpox originates from thousands of years ago and was officially eradicated at the end of the 1970s, but the infectious disease has only recently been downgraded as a potential terror threat.

It emerged last month that the British government quietly decided that the possibility of terrorists using the virus in a biological attack was too far-fetched.

It led to criticism from the science community that former prime minister Tony Blair had wasted millions of pounds in preparing for a threat which seemed unlikely to materialise.

The US government has just placed orders for a new smallpox vaccine which could treat approximately two million of the country’s residents in the event of an attack.”

Yazid Sufaat, where did you get your anthrax vaccine? You reportedly obtained vaccine through intermediary from Bioport. See 500 Days.
