CASE CLOSED … what really happened in the 2001 anthrax attacks?

* Where was the DARPA research conducted related to the dried powder that the FBI anthrax expert made in 2000 out of Ames supplied by Bruce Ivins from Flask 1029 at USAMRIID?

Amerithrax Sample Status and Benefit Analysis for 6/27/2002

    “University of Maryland

INITIATIVE: Dr. Catherine Fenselau, The Department of Chemistry, University of Maryland is recognized world wide as a leading authority on the analytical chemistry of biological organisms. Her current efforts involve validating a method to detect if spores have been grown on agar or by fermentation.

STATUS: Analyses performed on surrogate samples grown on Agar were initially positive. Subsequent analyses failed to detect Agar in the same surrogate samples. …”

Comment: Dr. Fenselau thanked John Ezzell in connection with the DARPA research for which he made a dried powder using Ames supplied by Bruce Ivins from Flask 1029. The research related to testing the effects of a sonicator and corona plasma discharge on Ames spores. John Ezzell’s former assistant, Joany Jackman, did additional research at Johns-Hopkins where the former Zawahiri associate also tested his decontamination agent (in addition to Dugway, LSU, USAMRIID, and Edgewood). Dr. Jackman would be a key interview — for example, she could explain the facilities built to do the DARPA research at USAMRIID.

A letter dated February 11, 2011 from David Hardy, Chief Record/Information Services to Dr Anne-Marie Mazza, Director of the Committee on Science, Technology and Law states:

“On January 13, 2011, I reviewed the 18 page FBI Electronic Communication (EC) dated June 5, 2008 from the Washington Field Office and WMD Directorate, All classified information was redacted and withheld pursuant to the Order”

Then the 18 pages that follow are heavily redacted.

Dr. Jennifer A.L. Smith gave a wonderful presentation to the NAS in which as the head CIA WMD analyst working on Amerithrax and a former FBI Special Agent on WMD, she urged that things presently in the classified folder be moved to the unclassified folder and that the material be produced.

I have no idea why the issue was not visited and her advice was not heeded two years ago.

Dr. Ali Al-Timimi, who shared a suite with the DARPA-funded researchers Ken Alibek and former deputy USAMRIID Commander Charles Bailey, had done classified work for the Navy. He got a letter of commendation from the White House. Some years earlier, he had formerly been the assistant to the White House Chief of Staff. What did his classified research entail?

Regarding the overseas collection, a memo dated June 5, 2008 fto the Washington Field, WMD Directorate from Laboratory, CBSU, under the title AMERITHRAX states:

“As part of the investigation into the mailings of anthrax-laced letters mailed in September and October 2001, FBI personnel conducted an evidence collection [100 lines or so redacted].

The described test includes gene markers on plasmids x101 and x102.

Molecular analysis of the samples yielded positive results for all three of NMRC’s PCR markers for Ba in 3 samples. The positive results were noted in one swab taken from the outside of an unopened medicine dropper package, … one swab taken from a sink … and one swab from a drain hose…
