The FBI’s case against Dr. Ivins is clearly bogus: no evidence, no witnesses, an impossible timeline, science that proves innocence instead of guilt. So what really happened? And why?
I can imagine only 3 possible “actual” scenarios …
- The FBI has more evidence against Dr. Ivins but is, for some undisclosed reason, withholding that evidence.
- The FBI has not solved the case and has no idea who prepared and mailed the anthrax letters that killed 5 Americans in 2001.
- The FBI knows who did it (not Dr. Ivins) but is covering up the actual perpetrators, again for undisclosed reasons.
The “fictional” scenario in my novel CASE CLOSED has been judged by many readers, including a highly respected official in the U.S. Intelligence Community, as perhaps more plausible than the FBI’s unproven assertions.

One major thing that blinded the investigators from realizing that a distribution NETWORK was involved in Amerithrax was: the FBI ‘zero filed’ the St Pete hoax letters,
the TOWN OF QUANTICO letter etc. Once you realize that a subset of ‘hoax’ letters was sent by the Amerithrax perps (for the sake of muddying the waters, causing maximum confusion and throwing investigators off track), the necessity of there being a group action becomes clear. This should have been step one in a solution.

Dr. Bruce Ivins hosted one Egyptian visitor in the B3 who was the lifelong friend of a former Egyptian Islamic Jihad member, a schoolmate, recruited by Ayman Zawahiri.

The NAS review should have included a review of the documents from peer reviewed literature in Ayman Zawahiri’s possession rather than allow the former collection scientist from ATCC narrowly frame the questions around the USAMRIID tragically committed suicide.
The NAS review should have included a technical review of the spraydrying documents on Al-Hawsawi’s laptop.
The NAS review should have included a technical review of Rauf Ahmad’s notes and handwritten letter (he was one of the scientists working for Ayman Zawahiri).
The NAS review should have included a technical review of the later typed correspondence from a later visit by Rauf Ahmad indicating that he had successfully achieved the targets.
