* from anonymous scientist … the quantity of spores needed for the attack was simply not even at Detrick – and would have been noticed if it was missing

Posted by DXer on March 15, 2010

Anonymous Scientist comments … Also this email (see below) does not mention RMR-1030. So basicaly he is saying that there was 358ml of spores left in RMR-1029 on November 13, 2001 and that was by far the biggest quantity of spores in any one place at Detrick. There was 1.1 x 10^13 spores which is about 10 g of spores suspended in water. That’s less than the same amount required for the entire attack. The below email demonstrates that the quantity of spores needed for the attack was simply not even at Detrick – and would have been noticed if it was missing. So why did the FBI go after Detrick for 8 years?

RE: IG Visit Next Week

We in our lab have begun an inventory of the B. anthracis culture collection of our lab to include

1) strain or isolate; 2) location; 3) volume; 4) concentration (CFU). We have completed the inventory

for the B. anthracis “Ames” strain, should the question arise during the meeting with the IG

investigation team this week. Below lists what we have for the strain (all in the B-3 biocontainment

suite):

1) Hall -70C freezer (MMCN F2063) – vegetative cells frozen in BHI + 12% glycerol – 12 vials at 1

ml per vial; 10 vials at 0.5 ml per vial; concentration of 1 X 10^8 CFU per ml; 17 ml total; 1.7 X 10^9

total

2) Refrigerator in B313 – spores in suspension – 5 polypropylene tubes of spores in 1% phenol –

160 ml total at 1X10^9 per ml; 1.6 X 10^11 per ml total

3) Refrigerator – B313 – spores in suspension – 250 ml polycarbonate flask containing 50 ml at 2 X

10^9 per ml; 1 X 10^11 spores total

4) B3 cold room – GLP spores, suspended in 1% phenol and Hypaque purified – RMR 1029 – 358

ml at 3 X 10^10 per ml; 1.1 X 10^13 spores total; (These are spores made at Dugway Proving Ground

by and they are the ones used for aerosol challenge.)
